Robu Mission
In Robu Mission, fantastic cyborg-like clay figurines emerge from a strange meeting of past and future. Drawing on the ancient Jōmon Dogū and Minoan and Mycenaean goddesses, they combine fragments of archaeological forms with symbols gathered from different cultures and the visual language of machines and robotics.
Part human, part goddess, part machine, these mysterious figures seem to belong to no single time or place. Their forms suggest something ancient yet strangely futuristic — as though they have travelled across thousands of years to deliver a message.
The pieces are made using different types of clay and a variety of complex glazing techniques, including crackled and lava glazes. The surfaces become an important part of the work, adding texture, depth and a sense of transformation. Rather than simply decorating the figures, the glazes enhance their presence and help communicate their mysterious, otherworldly message.
Are they messengers from the deep past, visitors from the far future, or perhaps both?
“Robu Mission” explores the possibility of a cultural time warp, where ancient beliefs, human imagination and visions of technology meet in clay.
